~MATH NEWS~

Time is running out for a FREE 100….print off the email you received about this update or forward me the email you received about this update.  The last day I will accept for a free 100 is Monday, February 24, 2014.

This week’s objective was measuring LENGTH both customary and metric.  I posted several websites for the students to utilize at home to help build a deeper connection.  The students created connectors using body parts.  This provides a mental picture of the approximate length of each unit.  Pictures will be coming soon.  The students will ONL Y be responsible for converting Customary Units.  We will convert using T-charts.  This concept is easy for some students and much more challenging for others.  Hopefully, by using the strategies, drawing a pictures, and knowing multiplication facts the concept will become embedded with little difficulty.

Homework is given each night.  If they do not turn a completed (this includes strategies not just answers) homework assignment the next day, I place a zero in the grade book.  When I receive the completed homework, I deduct points for being late, and change the grade to what they earned.  Each day we go over the previous evening’s homework.  This is a wonderful opportunity for me to model strategies, to review concepts, and to listen to the creative ways they come up with the answers.

Math tutoring is every Wednesday and Friday morning beginning at 7:15 in room 101.

Don’t forget multiplication and division facts must be memorized.  Practice makes perfect and leaves no time for gaps to be created….Thank you for being a fantastic parent.

Today the students designed, created, and presented Geometry Concepts in video format.  Please click on a link to view your student’s creation.  First period will be Mrs. Webb’s homeroom, second period will be Mrs.  Montieth’s homeroom and third period will be Mrs. Jones’ homeroom.  Movie stars, teachers, writers, creators, editors, and delightful students being awesome.  ENJOY!!!!

Oh, one more item I need to address.  Please make sure all strategies are being used on homework.  When a sticky situation on our Math homework or classwork arises, strategies come to the rescue, making the solution much easier to understand.

Thank you….
